With the wealth of responsibilities a Maid of Honor may face, it can seem like an unpleasant or torturous experience, but believe me, being a Maid of Honor for a good friend or sister is SO worth it! My wonderful friend asked me to be her Maid of Honor about ten seconds before I had a chance to ask her to be MY Maid of Honor. It was a funny, yet touching moment for both of us. And I don't know exactly how she felt about her Maid of Honor experience, but she was the best possible Maid of Honor I could have asked for.
As for my own Maid of Honor (or Matron of Honor, technically, since I was married a few months sooner) experience, there was a lot of organization and planning, long conversations about flowers and stress levels, but I wouldn't trade it for anything.
As a Maid of Honor, I was the one who got to surprise and delight the Bride with the clever wine tasting we organized as part of her Bridal Shower. It was me, her super cool Maid of Honor, who picked her up in a limo the night of the Bachelorette party and gave her an elegant flower corsage (she's that kind of girl, as opposed to me who was forced by MY Maid of Honor to wear a wedding veil covered in penises and condoms...fun stuff!).
Since I was a smart Maid of Honor, I helped her pick out the Bridesmaids dresses (ensuring there would be no orange feathers on the dresses...although, Julie, if you're reading this, I would never think your taste in a Maid of Honor dress could be that bad!). If you're a proactive Maid of Honor who helps the Bride dress shop, you too can ensure that you'll be a pretty (and not hideous puke green and gray striped with fuchsia accents) Maid of Honor.
And I had the joy of being the Maid of Honor who was there (although long-distance) to listen to the Bride's concerns, try to offer my sage Maid of Honor advice, and otherwise be there to offer moral support. Of course, the Bride and I, her Maid of Honor, had a unique relationship in that I was also a Bride with HER as my Maid of Honor. It gave us lots to talk about. But even if you're not in the same situation for your Maid of Honor experience, I guarantee you that it will be a memorable one.
Then, finally, on the day of the wedding and the events directly leading up to it (Rehearsal dinner, etc.), the Maid of Honor is the one who is there for the Bride. This bestows upon the Maid of Honor a certain amount of responsibility, but also, as the term implies, Honor. You, the Maid of Honor, have the privilege and honor of standing right next to the Bride during the wedding ceremony. You get to watch the Groom's ridiculously happy expression up close as he gives his wedding vows. The Maid of Honor is there to hand the happy Bride a tissue when the emotion gets to be too much. I wouldn't trade this intimate connection to them both for anything.
Being a Maid of Honor was an amazing, emotional, fun, crazy, occasionally stressful, but mostly just incredibly cool experience. Rejoice in all the fun Maid of Honor moments, and remember all the wonderful things about being chosen as a Maid of Honor anytime details like, "who forgot to pick up the Bridal Shower cake?!" come up. It's so worth every minute.
